Lagos Taskforce impounds 63 motorcycles
CITIZENS COMPASS—The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offenses (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce), on Friday, said it has impounded 63 commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada for violating traffic rules in the State.
The exercise was in a continued effort to enforce traffic laws and ban on commercial motorcycles in the Metropolis.
The Taskforce said it has launched a comprehensive operation targeting recalcitrant motorcycle (Okada) operators who persist in violating the ban on restricted routes, highways, and bridges across the State.
This exercise has been reinforced in areas where recalcitrant Okada riders were noticeable in the state.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed that the latest enforcement operation was carried out in key areas such as Mile2 Oke bridge, Mile2 under bridge, Berger Suya, Amuwo odofin and Apple junction in Festac area, where recalcitrant Okada operators were found blatantly flouting the state’s traffic regulations. The Agency, in collaboration with other security outfits, has vowed to maintain its zero-tolerance approach to violations on these restricted routes.
“The ban on Okada operations in certain areas was put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all Lagosians, and we will not tolerate any breach of this order. Those who continue to operate in restricted areas, endangering the lives of road users, will face the full wrath of the law.” Akerele stated.
He noted that despite repeated warnings and sensitization efforts, some operators remain defiant, thereby endangering public safety. The 63 motorcycles impounded during today’s operation have been confiscated, and legal action will be taken against the violators.
The Chairman reiterated the State Government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents as spelt out in the THEMES PLUS Agenda of the State government, urging Okada operators to adhere strictly to the laws governing their operations. He also called on members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers by reporting violations and desist from patronizing okada operators for their own safety.
The Chairman assured that the Lagos State Taskforce will continue its patrols and enforcement activities across the State, particularly in areas that are prone to illegal Okada operations.
