Obasa’s son backs out of chairmanship race in Lagos

…As APC clears aspirants

CITIZENS COMPASS– Abdulganiyu Obasa, the son of the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has withdrawn from the chairmanship race in the Agege area of the State.

His name was conspicuously missing as the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) released its list of 418 cleared chairmanship aspirants.

The chairmanship primaries had been scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2025.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), had scheduled elections into chairmanship and 376 councillors for the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), ahead of the July 10, 2025.

A total of 432 aspirants have been approved by the party’s electoral committee following a week-long screening exercise held at the party’s secretariat, Acme Road, Ogba, between April 29 and May 3, 2025.

It was gathered that Obasa’s son was advised to step down to avoid an internal crisis.

“Leaders felt that his candidature would cause a crisis in the party, so he was asked to step down, and his father agreed,” a party insider revealed.

Reacting, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Seye Oladejo, said the screening exercise was strict and fair. “The APC Lagos State qualifications are very clear for the position of chairmanship. Every qualification will be checked. For instance, the West African Examinations Council will confirm each candidate’s result.”

In 2024, the State Chairman of the party, Cornelius Ojelabi, at a function in the Igbogbo-Baiyeku in Ikorodu Division, said imposition of candidates would be discouraged.
