Popular face behind TV programme, New Masquerade dies
CITIZENS COMPASS— A veteran Nollywood actor, Rev Davis Ofor, popularly known as Clarus is dead.
Clarus was one of the popular faces behind Nigeria’s longest-running and most beloved television shows, New Masquerade.
He was 85 years old.
The New Masquerade was a highly popular Nigerian television sitcom that aired on the Nigerian Television Network (NTN) on Tuesday nights from the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s.
A fellow actor, Tony Akposhe, announced the death on Tuesday.
In an emotional tribute shared via Instagram, Akposheri revealed that he and the late Ofor spent their last Christmas Eve together—laughing, reminiscing, and speaking with hope about the future—unaware that it would be their final moments.
Sharing photos from that meeting, he wrote:
“Veteran actor Davis Ofor, fondly known as our own Clarus from New Masquerade, is gone.”
Ofor’s portrayal of the quirky, humorous Clarus endeared him to millions of Nigerians and cemented his place as one of the defining faces of early Nigerian television. At a time when family sitcoms dominated national screens, his performance brought laughter into homes and made him a household name across generations.
Though details surrounding the cause of his death were not immediately disclosed, tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, fans, and admirers who remember him not just as an actor, but as a warm and vibrant personality.
Akposheri, visibly shaken by the loss, described Ofor as more than a colleague—calling him a friend, a brother, and a man whose presence lit up every room.
