Sanwo-Olu sends delegate to  scene of Iganmu tanker explosion

… No life was lost - LASEMA, fire service

CITIZENS COMPASS —Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, October 13, 2023, sent a delegation to the scene of the tanker explosion which occurred at about 8p.m the previous day.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the extent of the disaster and debunk false information circulating around.

The false information was that many people died in the inferno and also some of the pictures being circulated were from old scenes which were not from the State.

The delegation consisted of the Commissioners for Special Duties & Intergovernmental Relations, Information & Strategy, and Transports, Works namely Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, Mr. Seun Osiyemi and Dr. Adekunle Olayinka. They were present during the evacuation of the remains of the  vehicles involved in the incident and to make the road motorable and accessible.

The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margret, received the special delegation and led them on a tour of the scene.

The evacuation operation will lead to the reopening of the Moshood Abiola Way, which connects the dual-quadrapont bridge in Iganmu, Lagos, soon.

Investigations have revealed that a fully laden 45,000 liters tanker experienced a mechanical fault while ascending the quadrapont bridge. This led to its roll back, causing it to hit another tanker and a faulty containerized trailer, resulting in an instant explosion and fire.

It is important to reiterate that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded in this unfortunate accident.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu in his disaster assessment on Friday, said a total number of 11 vehicles were involved in the fire disaster.

According to him, “After post disaster assessment, a total of 11 vehicles were burnt in the inferno; comprising:

3 cars,

2 mini buses,

2 tankers,

1 tipper truck,

3 flat bed articulated trucks laden with containers.

” No life was lost and no injuries sustained as all drivers and passengers fled the scene just before the flames began.”
