NANS threatens protests over scarcity of new Naira notes, fuel

CITIZENS COMPASS– THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West (Zone D), has threatened to organise the mother of all protests should the Federal Government fails to proffer solution to the lingering scarcity of new Naira notes and fuel across the country.

The students disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday, February 3, 2023 by its spokesperson, Awoyinfa Opeoluwa.

NANS kicked against vandalisation of property by some protesters especially in Ibadan, Oyo State over the weekend.

The spokesperson said the resultant effects of the scarcity has brought untold hardship on innocent Nigerians calling on those in authorities to find a last solution to it.

The statement reads, “The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students Southwest (NANS Zone D) has found it necessary to issue a press statement on the high level of hardship been brought upon Nigerian students, workers and Nigerians at large.

“Their is low cash flow, poor banking network, high cost of fuel/fuel scarcity, to mention but a few.

“Nigerians are not asking for too much but just the basic amenities to live comfortably. The whole Nation is at a point where no one knows what would happen next.

“The level of calmness of the innocent citizens are getting to the extreme which has brought about showing of grievances, a scenario which happened on Friday, in Ibadan, Oyo state, where a bank Automated Teller Machines (ATM) and police station were burnt.

“We call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari for a swift action on the situation of things in the country.

“Nigerian Students are tired of the high rate of hardship melted upon us: No cash to purchase necessary things to aid academic excellence, no fuel to power generating sets for students who read at night and laboratory researches, and no transport means for students to attend classes. We are tired.

“We call on the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele to look into the issues of shortage of Naira. Why should Nigerians be buying Naira when we are not at war? We call on ICPC and EFCC to checkmate bankers/Nigerians involved in selling New Naira notes which we believe is against the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We challenge the leadership of NLC and TUC, why have they been silent to protect the interest and welfare of there members. Fuel scarcity is affecting workers from going to work, no cash to even afford transportation. Many workers are losing their jobs due to these hardship. It was believed that NLC and TUC are known to speak up when issues like these are happening in the country but guess it has lost its core values.

“We appeal to all peaceful Nigeria citizens to ensure a well coordinated and peaceful protest. We understand how frustrated everyone is, but vandalizing public properties won’t solve the current challenges, we believe this phase shall pass soon.

“The leadership of NANS Zone D is hereby appealing to the federal government of Nigeria, to find a lasting solution to the hardship.

“Fellow Nigerian Students, we must appreciate your calmness and doggedness since the emancipation of these hardship on us.

The leadership of NANS Southwest is calling on all Nigerian students to get prepared for a mother of all protest as we issue out timetable of protest in our next release.
