One stabbed to death in Lagos market

CITIZENS COMPASS— One person was stabbed to death while another was injured on Wednesday, when a violent clash occurred in the Madillas area of Balogun Market, Lagos Island.

The clash occurred at about 11a.m among some hoodlums.

Footage of the incident captured some hoodlums engaging in a free-for-all as the vicinity was outrightly deserted by traders.

Lagos State Police Command raced to the occasion to restore normalcy.

It also dispelled the rumour making the round that the clash was inter-tribal.

Citizens Compass monitored an audio clip of a female voice on a loop which said, “Goodmorning house, we need attention. We need the assistance of the Police in Idumota around Balogun, Oluwole, Martins street.

“They are fighting and somebody is down.

“Please, respond to this call immediately.

*We are in distress, I am presently in Oluwole Market, everywhere has scattered.”

One of the viral videos monitored by Citizens Compass captured a man lying down in the pool of his own blood.

There were indications that he was hacked with a machete as people rallied round to resuscitate him but this appeared to be too late.

As at the time of this report, the exact cause of the clash could not be established though some eyewitnesses linked it to a cult war or an inter-tribal clash between Yoruba and Igbo traders.

Spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement dispelled the inter-tribal rumour saying, “The Lagos State Police Command hereby wish to inform the general public that there was no tribal clash or disturbance between any ethnic groups and others inside Balogun Market today.

“There was an incident of a free-for-all fight between some hoodlums and miscreants in the Balogun Market in the early hours of today at around 11 am.

During the fight, one Ebuka Adindu from Abia State stabbed one Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State to death, and the said Ebuka Adindu in turn stabbed himself on the shoulder and became unconscious. He is currently under arrest in the hospital, where he is being treated.

“Investigation into the matter will be concluded, and he will be prosecuted after he has been discharged from the hospital. There was no loss of innocent lives or injury to any person or damage to the goods and properties of marketers inside Balogun Market.”
