Students, teachers escape death as building collapses in Ikorodu

CITIZENS COMPASS—Many students of Odokekere Community Junior Secondary School in Odogunyan area of Ikorodu Division in Lagos State, were reportedly saved from the jaws of death when a building with structural defects collapsed in the school.
The incident reportedly occurred during the day, while academic activities were in full swing on Thursday.
Citizens Compass gathered that the students and their teachers were quick to escape before the building gave way.
Videos of the incident, as posted by TikTok user B Boss and monitored by Citizens Compass, captured onlookers at the scene.
Some students and teachers, alongside sympathisers, were seen thanking God for saving them from disaster.
The incident has attracted reactions from social media users.
While some have thanked God for the lives of the students and teachers, others criticised the government for not being proactive.
Meanwhile, the Council Chairman of Ikorodu North, Mayor Ameen Apanisile, has visited the school for an on-the-spot assessment.
According to the statement signed by Adinlewa Oluwafemi, the Chief Press Secretary to the Council, the Chairman visited the scene of the incident following an alarming report.
The statement reads:
Mayor Ameen Apanisile, today, paid an urgent visit to Odokekere Community Junior Secondary School following an alarming report of a dangerously failing school structure within the school premises.
During an on-the-spot assessment of the affected area, the Mayor ordered the immediate evacuation of the unsafe section as a critical precautionary measure to avert any potential loss of lives or injuries. He firmly stated that the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and school staff are non-negotiable, reaffirming this as a top priority of his administration.
Mayor Apanisile further directed all relevant departments and technical officers to take swift and decisive action to address the structural defects.
He emphasised the need for urgent intervention, thorough assessment, and the implementation of all necessary safety and structural remedial measures without delay.
Mayor Ameen Apanisile reassured the school management, students, parents, and residents of Odokekere Community of the council’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding public infrastructure, and ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.
He reiterated that education, child welfare, and public safety remain at the core of his people-centred governance approach.
Ikorodu North LCDA will continue to monitor the situation closely and ensure that appropriate actions are taken to prevent future occurrences.
Citizens Compass reports that the building collapsed a few days after resumption of academic activities for another academy season after the Yuletide.
