
Two months after swearing-in, vice chairman, councillor die in Lagos
CITIZENS COMPASS—Two months after swearing-in, the councillor representing Ward F in Shomolu Local Government, Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, has passed on.
Until her death in the early hours of Sunday, she represented Bajulaiye-Folagoro constituency.
Basirat was among the councillors that were sworn-in in July, 2025.
She was the third councillor to die within a space of two months.
The council chairman of Shomolu Local Government, Lateef Ashimi, announced the death in a condolence message which reads; “We regret to announce the painful death of our Ward F Councillor, Hon. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan. This tragic news has sent shockwaves through our community, as it was never expected or foreseen.”
“Mayabikan’s death came closely after the losses of two other female councillors: Hon. Oluwakemi Rufai of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, who died on August 13, 2025, just two weeks after her swearing-in, and Hon. Zainab Kosoko Shotayo of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, who passed away six days later after a brief illness.”
In a related development, Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), also announced the sudden death of Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of the council.
“With deep pain and an overwhelming sense of loss, the Executive Chairman, Legislative Arm, Management, and the entire people of Badagry West LCDA announce the sudden and heartbreaking death of our Vice Chairman, Princess Remilekun Nutayi.”
The former Supervisor for Education was the daughter of His Royal Majesty, Oba Oyekan Adekanmi Ilufemiloye to Possi III, the Alapa of Apa Egun Awori Kingdom.
