
Narrow escape for RCCG worshippers as building collapses in Lagos
CITIZENS COMPASS—Some worshippers of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), in Shomolu area of Lagos State, on Monday, escaped death when the pillars of a collapsed two-storey building fell on the church.
The RCCG branch, Liberty Parish, was located at 5, Craig Street, off Apata Road,
Shomolu.
The two-storey building was under construction when it suddenly collapsed at about 1p.m.
Some construction workers also escaped the danger.
No life was lost to the incident which was confirmed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in its update.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in the update said, “Upon arrival of the Agency’s response team at the scene, it was observed that a two-storey building under construction was found to have collapsed during the decking process.
“Preliminary investigations conducted by the Cobra response team revealed that the collapsed structure was one of two structures being constructed at the site. The cause of the incident is yet to be determined at time of report.
“No life was lost and no injuries recorded as the workers reportedly escaped the scene unscathed before the arrival of emergency responders.
“The pillars of the collapsed building fell on a church (RCCG, LIBERTY PARISH at 5, Craig street) which was partially affected but no life was lost and no injuries sustained as worshippers in the church also escaped unscathed.
“The Cobra response team alongside all other responders
– Coordinated search of the incident scene was conducted to ensure no victim was trapped under the collapsed building.
– The construction yard has been cordoned off immediately.
– Public enlightenment and sensitisation was carried out on the need to stay away from the collapsed site. “
The collapse occurred barely three years after a branch of RCCG in Mushin area of Lagos gave way.
Recall that in July 2022, a branch of RCCG under construction, located opposite 17, Cardoso Street, off Martin street, Mushin, had given way at about 6.30p.m. on a Friday.
