Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, others occupy National Assembly

CITIZENS COMPASS— Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections, and a political activist, Aisha Yesufu, were among many protesters that occupied the National Assembly complex in Abuja to demand for clarity on the electronic transmission of election results.

The protest which was held under tight security was tagged, “Occupy National Assembly”.

Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were on ground as the main entrance to the National Assembly was barricaded during the protest.

The demonstrators began their march from the Federal Secretariat and through to the National Assembly gate.

Members of the Civil Society organisations(CSO) were in attendance.

The protesters bore placards with inscriptions such as: “Akpabio don’t destroy our democracy,” “Say no to electoral fraud,” “Akpabio don’t dare the masses,” “stop betrayal of the ballot,” “The Senate must prioritise citizens over politics,” “The conference committee must protest the integrity of Nigeria’s electronic.”

They expressed frustration at the Senate’s decision to drop a clause from the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill that would have made electronic transmission of results from polling units compulsory.

The protest followed concerns over a recent session by the Senate on electronic transmission of election results.
