
Police arraign NURTW chieftain, Shamelon in Lagos
…Gani Fawehinmi group condemns assault, murder
CITIZENS COMPASS—Lagos State Police Command will on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, arraigned a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shamelon.
He will be arraigned at the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court, at 8.a.m, according to the confirmation by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Adeoye Olufemi,
Staff Officer, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command.
Citizens Compass reported that on Friday, September 19, 2025, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, responded to some protesters on Lagos Island following an assault and killing of two persons.
Citizens Compass reported that the Command in a statement said, “The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Samsideen Oladiti ‘m’, popularly known as “Shamelon”, aged 55, in connection with two violent crimes on Lagos Island involving a case of murder and another of assault occasioning harm. The suspect is currently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, for discreet investigation.
“On 17th September 2025, at about 3:00pm, the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists to inflict serious bodily injury. The victim was rushed to hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently receiving medical treatment.
“On 18th September 2025, at about 11:00am, another complaint was lodged against the same suspect in connection with an incident that occurred on 28th August 2025. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face, inflicting severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim was confirmed dead by a doctor on 17th September 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.
“Following news of the death, sympathizers of the deceased mobilized and staged a violent protest at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, setting two motorcycles belonging to the suspect ablaze and causing unrest in the area.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led police personnel comprising mobile policemen, conventional police officers, and tactical squads to the scene. He swiftly restored calm, prevented further breakdown of law and order, and assured residents that the suspect is in custody and will be promptly prosecuted after investigations are concluded.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to assure members of the public that justice will be diligently pursued in all the cases against the suspect. CP Olohundare Jimoh further appeals to residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and not to take the law into their own hands. He enjoins them to cooperate fully with the police in the ongoing investigations.”
Meanwhile, Gani Fawehinmi Organization (GAFORG) has condemned Shamelon for the alleged assault and murderer.

Publicity Secretary, GAFORG, in a recent statement said, “Gani Fawehinmi Organization (GAFORG) in strongest term condemn the brutal, barbaric, murderous and inhuman act of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Shamsideen Adio popularly known as “Shamelion” notorious for serial physical assault of people always, for beating to stupor and battered to death a dispatch rider in Tapa Street, Lagos Island without justification.
“A video of the unfortunate incident went viral online on September 18, 2025, which captured vividly the senseless, irrational and condemnable act of the NURTW member alongside his associates, battering and brutalizing the dispatch rider unrestrained, until life was snuffed out the helpless victim, after efforts to assist him gain consciousness when collapsed, due to the repeated attacks.
“GAFORG acknowledge the sanctity of human lives as an inalienable right of every Nigerian, a fundamental human right enshrined in the Grundnorm, 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) as amended, which confer and recognize the “RIGHT TO LIFE” that must be enjoyed by all, thus nobody no matter how highly placed, possess or have the right to take another man’s life, which is a capital crime, unless by the Court, after due process of the law.
“Due to the grave assault on the dispatch rider by the NURTW member, which unfortunately led to his untimely death, our organization is fully aware of the arrest of the “criminal”/ suspect by the Lagos Police Command and taken into custody to face the full wrath of the law.
“GAFORG hereby call on the Commissioner of Police, Lagos to institute a detailed, diligent, unbiased, transparent and thorough investigation on the criminal act of Shamsideen, while ensure he have his day(s) in the court of law, to allow justice served and dispensed accordingly after the course of prosecution, because no one should be seen or treated as being above the law, thus a case of “sacred cow” should not be entertained by the authorities, just to serve as deterrent to others like him.
“Our organization equally commend the NURTW Chairman in Lagos, who swiftly issued a statement to condemn the barbaric act of the union member and his associate, dissociated and distanced the union from the ugly incident. GAFORG also seize this opportunity to call on him to use the unfortunate incident to immediately commence a sensitization, enlightenment and training program for all his members in Lagos, educate them on public conduct and how to be a good citizen without exhibiting thuggery, while sanitize the entire body from errant members, who bring NURTW into disrepute, due to the notoriety of some.
“Our society must be rid of lawless citizens, who takes laws into their hands at will without recourse to the law of the land, because they are privileged with backings and covert support from people within the corridors of power and at the top, while justice for the deceased dispatch rider must not be delayed for whatever reason in ensuring the culprit face the consequence(s) of his condemnable and criminal act accordingly, without compromise from any quarter.”
