Youths flog policeman for alleged drug abuse
CITIZENS COMPASS—Some angry youths have reportedly flogged a policeman and two accomplices for alleged drug abuse in Nkpolu community in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Tension mounted in the community following the action which took place over the weekend.
The trio were grabbed and publicly flogged by the youths.
This followed a campaign of “No Drug Abuse”, recently launched by the Nkpolu youth leadership to curb rising cases of drug consumption and its toll on residents, especially young people.
According to locals, drug use in the area has spiraled to the point where some youths allegedly sold family property just to fund their addiction. Determined to put an end to the menace, the community youths stormed a suspected drug den on Saturday, where they apprehended three persons, including a police officer identified as Joshua Eyong.
Despite presenting his police identification card, Eyong who was in mufti was not spared as he was flogged alongside the other suspects before being handed over to community leaders.
Speaking on the development, Nkpolu Youth President, Owhonda Chamberlain, said the crackdown was a deliberate effort to cleanse the community of drugs and its negative influence.
“There is a campaign going on in our community led by the youths. We discovered that some of our children now sell their parents’ hard-earned property just to take drugs. Nkpolu has decided there will be no drug dealer and no drug smoker in this community again,” Chamberlain stated.
