
14 feared trapped as two-storey building collapses in Ikorodu
CITIZENS COMPASS– A total number of 14 persons were on Tuesday, feared trapped when a two-storey building collapsed in Ota-Ona, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
10 of the victims were immediately rescued to the hospital for medical attention.
The collapse occurred at day time at No 7, Obafemi Awolowo Road adjacent to a popular gas station in the area.
A resident of Ota-Ona, Pa Najeem Akinlabi said sympathisers tried their best before the arrival of emergency providers.
According to him, “I was around Anibaba when I got the information and immediately rushed to the scene. I saw policemen from Ikorodu Division, officials of Lagos Neighborhood and Safety Corps (LNSC) and other agencies.
Citizens Compass sighted a video from the scene where some of the victims were being rescued from the rubbles to a waiting pick-up van as sympathisers were rallying round.
The Director, Lagos State Fire & Rescue Service, Margret Adeseye, confirmed the collapse in her updates.
She said 10 persons have been rescued while search and rescue for the remaining was ongoing.
She said, “It’s a rescue operation at the scene of an uncompleted two-storey building.
“A total number of 14 people were in the building. Those rescued were male adults ranging between ages 28 to 35 and all were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
“Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the remaining people.”
She said agencies on ground were; The Nigeria Police, LNSC, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Building control agency ( LASBCA) and Nigerian Security and civil defence corps (NSCDC) among others.
She said the Divisional Police Officer (DPI), Ikorodu Division, Akimola Clement, was on ground.
The Tuesday collapse occurred barely four years after two people were rescued from the rubbles of a two-storey building at 97, Lagos Road, Aruna area of Ikorodu.
